Opera Viva! offers a unique educational and travel experience. The program provides the perfect balance between classes, planned events and free time for independent exploration.

The world comes to Verona each summer to hear the finest opera productions in the famed L’Arena di Verona.
www.arena.it. You, too, will experience those perfect summer nights…a slight breeze sweeps through the
Piazza Bra as the throngs gather around the entrance to the 2,000 year old arena. The ancient bell tower in
the Piazza chimes nine o’clock. The orchestra conductor appears and acknowledges the thunderous applause.
Darkness has settled in, the 25,000 people in the stadium seats take their cue and light a little candlea time
honored tradition setting the atmosphere for the start of the opera. A hush falls over the crowd and the violins
sound the opening plaintive strains of Aida. You close your eyes and let yourself be transported back to ancient
Egypt…

    Not only will you hear the finest opera singers in the world, but you will have the unique experience of working with one of them during a three-day residency! These artists are not retired—they are the stars of today, performing in the most famous opera venues in the world, uniquely qualified to counsel you and help you navigate your course for a career in opera. Because Opera Viva! is exclusively limited to 20 students per session, your access to these famous artists is unique to any other collegiate or summer opera program.

    Performing is a major component of Opera Viva! and the program is designed to focus and highlight your voice through private pedagogy lessons, opera coaching, concert repertoire master classes, Alexander Technique and Italian language study. Every student will have the opportunity to perform on two public recitals during the three week session. One program will showcase Italian concert repertoire, and the other will present arias from Italian opera.  In addition to the recitals, you will perform in opera scenes for critique and review by June Anderson.These festive performances will be open to the public and your friends and family will be welcomed to attend!

The accommodations for Opera Viva! are lovely. www.residenceadige.it Instead of standard dormitory or group housing, students will live in beautifully modern apartments. The Residence all’Adige is situated a pleasant 15 minute walk along the river from the ancient center of Verona. All apartments have a terrace, a fully furnished kitchenette, satellite tv, telephone, air conditioning, a security reception and switchboard on full-time duty.
There is fully-equipped gym on the premises, and token washing machines, dryers and an ironing room.
